Hard work pays off….I set up my first business, Crystal Clean Service back in December 2007 when I was 18, working from my bedroom. Within 6 months the business went limited due to turnover and I was recruiting the first members of my team. 15 years on I now sit on the Board of Directors, advising on strategy and growth.
With over 100 members of staff, Crystal Clean is one of the leading commercial cleaning companies in South Yorkshire and continues to expand.
Sometimes I pinch myself, still to this day, about how successful the company is.
But it was not a straightforward journey.
I went through The Juggle Struggle in years two and three – not that I realised that until year four (with 11 employees)!
I tried to work with a coach, but soon realised I had more experience running a business than he did.
My initial accountant/business advisor only saw a young girl and was so patronising I just couldn’t work with them.
Day by day, week by week, I figured out what worked, how to strengthen the business, and how to scale.
Gradually, as things improved, I was needed less and less. I stepped out of the business fully to sit on the Board in 2019.
I have to admit, I enjoy my strategic role with the company now probably more than I did when I was working in the business day in, day out. And that’s down to my own professional growth, development, and experience.
